CLAYSVILLE - There was plenty at stake when Trinity traveled to McGuffey Wednesday night for a Class AAA Section 4B wrestling match.

The winner would qualify for the WPIAL Class AAA Team Tournament, while the loser would be forced to sit idle for nearly three weeks without competition.

Behind a late surge of victories, Trinity clinched a spot in the postseason, defeating the Highlanders 42-22.

"It's an opportunity," said Trinity head coach Mike Marino. "When we started at the beginning of the season, we said we just wanted an opportunity. That's a reward for the kids working very hard."

The Hillers took an early lead by winning in the upper weights behind pins from both Patrick Jennings (189) and Kyle McWreath (285).

"Those guys are some of our leaders and they did what's expected from them," said Marino. "They lead and the younger guys follow that example."

McGuffey didn't go away quietly though, dominating the lighter weight classes. The Highlanders won four consecutive bouts to cut the score to 24-22.

"Our smaller guys are good," said McGuffey head coach Jeff Breese. "They've worked very hard all season."

With the Highlanders having all the momentum, it was up to Trinity 130-pounder Matt Dates to snatch it back for Trinity.

Dates won with a quick pin that started a streak of four straight Trinity wins that also included a pin from Michael Ardeno (135). The win for Ardeno was the 100th of his career.

"We needed a big performance there and Matt gave us one," said Marino. "That's good for him because he is an extremely hard worker. We fed off his performance the rest of the way."

While Trinity advances to the team tournament, Breese has a challenge to keep his wrestlers ready until the individual postseason begins.

"It's a challenge for sure," said Breese. "It's actually a bit of a blessing as well. We have a couple banged up kids that can use the time to heel and get back in the lineup. We will have time to work and we will put the time to good use." Copyright Observer Publishing Co.
